Trekking on the Atlas and desert tour

Mount Toubkal (4167 m) is the highest mountain in North Africa.

The hike up to the top is challenging, but does not require mountaineering experience; the view from the summit is amazing.

Day 1: Marrakech – Ouirgane

Transfer from Marrakech to Agersioual, meeting with the team to organize the trekking route in the Ouirgane National Park. Overnight in the Berber village of Tizian. About 4-5 hour walking.

Day 2: Azzaden Valley

After breakfast we will cross the beautiful Azzaden Valley. The view opens to an impetuous torrent surrounded by lush walnut groves that lead to Toubkal and its peaks that govern the valley. Overnight stay at a Berber village or camp, if possible. About 7 hour walk.

Day 3: Azzaden Valley

We will take a fairly steep climb from the Azzaden Valley to the Toubkal Refuge, through the Ighouliden waterfalls and over the Aguelzim pass at 3,560 m. The lunch will be enriched by a spectacular view of the Atlas Mountains. Overnight at Toubkal Hut at 3,200m where you will probably share a room with other trekkers who will face Toubkal the next morning. About 7 hour walk

Day 4: Toubkal – Imlil

You will face the ascent on Toubkal (4,167 m) from where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara desert, then we will travel the way back, past the shelter and the trail to Imlil. This will be a long and challenging day, about 8-9 hour trekking, with a 900 m gradient up to almost 2,500 m to Imlil. Overnight stay scheduled for the tour.

Day 5: Imlil – Dades Valley

A driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Imlil at 9:00 am and head for the Atlas Mountains, passing the wonderful Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass. The route crosses many Berber villages and, once in the desert, you can visit the oases along the river and the barren hills dotted with kasbahs (fortified houses housing families and their livestock). Along the way, you can take a break and visit the Ouarzazate Film Studios or stop off for a walk. Once you reach Dades Gorge, you can hike or relax in your hotel. Overnight stay at Dades. (Total driving time 4 – 5 hours).

Day 6: Dadès Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer from the Dades Valley to the Todra gorge – a huge fault dividing the mountains of the High Atlas, climbing 300 meters in a narrow valley with palm groves and Berber villages. Here, you can take a walk and explore the palm grove, a green oasis full of big date palms. After lunch, you will head farther into the desert to the city of Merzouga to prepare yourself for the journey into the desert. In a kasba you will choose your camel to travel together towards the camp. At sunset you will travel for an hour and a half by camel to a Berber camp where you can enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and sleep under the stars or in a camp tent. (Total driving time 3 – 4 hours).

Day 7: Merzouga – Ait Benhaddou

After enjoying the spectacular desert sunrise, you will return to the Kasbah by camel. You will then have the opportunity to freshen up and enjoy a good breakfast. After breakfast you will head out of the desert for a trip to Ait Benhaddou. This is an ancient fortified city that contains countless kasbahs and is the location of many Hollywood films (The Mummy, The Gladiator, Alessandro, Lawrence of Arabia …). You will have the opportunity to walk around the buildings and explore the site with your guide. Overnight stay at a hotel near Ait Benhaddou. (Total driving time 5 – 6 hours).

Day 8: Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech

The trip will be along the Ounilla Valley to the historic Kasbah of Telouet, which was once an important stop for merchants. Exploration of the Kasbah followed by lunch; later you will head towards the Tizi-n-Tichka pass to Marrakech (Total driving time 2 – 3 hours). Overnight stay in Marrakech Riad or return by plane depending on the travel plan.
